The study examined 311 goals from open play across 166 matches in the FIFA World Cup 2010 and 2014 tournaments, as well as the UEFA Euros 2016. Each goal was evaluated for its importance, and the eight touches leading up to the goal were given a 'creativity score' ranging from 1 to 10. A goal was considered 'creative' if it had a creativity score of 8 or higher. Prof Memmert provided an example of a creative solution in the build-up to a goal.

Results: The Impact of Creativity on Goal Scoring

The results of the study revealed that the closer actions were to the goal, the more creative they tended to be. Furthermore, 86% of goals had at least one action with a creativity score of 7 or 8, while 44% had an action with a creativity score of 9 or 10, indicating a high level of creativity. Teams that advanced to the knockout stages of a tournament displayed higher levels of creativity in the penultimate pass before a goal.

Applications: Enhancing Technical Creativity

Prof Memmert emphasizes that creativity is closely linked to match outcomes and success. Therefore, training approaches that enhance technical creativity are essential. One such approach is paying attention to detail. Additionally, Prof Memmert introduces the model of the 7 Ds of tactical creativity, which includes Deliberate Play, 1-Dimension Games, Diversification, Deliberate Memory, Deliberate Coaching, Deliberate Motivation, and Deliberate Practice.
