ScoutMaster Pathway: Training for Scoutmasters and Assistant Scoutmasters

Who should take this training?

New Scouts BSA Scoutmasters and Assistant Scoutmasters are encouraged to take the ScoutMaster Pathway training. As the highest-ranking adult volunteer leaders working with youth in a Scouts BSA Troop, it is important to be equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills to effectively lead and mentor young Scouts.

Why should I take this training?

Taking on the role of Scoutmaster or Assistant Scoutmaster is a significant responsibility. The ScoutMaster Pathway training provides you with the essential information and tools you need to successfully run a Scouts BSA Troop and create a fun and engaging program for all the Scouts in your troop.

This training is especially important because leading a Scouts BSA Troop is different from leading a Cub Scout Pack. As a Scoutmaster or Assistant Scoutmaster, your role is more focused on mentoring and guiding youth members in their leadership development. The ScoutMaster Pathway training will provide you with a solid foundation to fulfill this role effectively.

When and where is this training available?

The ScoutMaster Pathway training is available online at My.Scouting.org. This allows you to complete the training at your own pace, in 10-minute modules, during your free time.

If you prefer an in-person training experience, the ScoutMaster Pathway training is generally offered in the fall and spring in different areas of the Capitol Area Council. The in-person training is typically a half-day course (approximately 4 hours) and may be combined with the Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills (IOLS) Training course to optimize your time.

What is the cost of this training?

The online version of the ScoutMaster Pathway training is free of charge when accessed through My.Scouting.org.

If you choose to attend the in-person classroom version of the training, there may be a small fee to cover the cost of handouts or other class materials.

How do I sign up for this training?

To access the online version of the ScoutMaster Pathway training, simply log in to My.Scouting.org. If you don't have an account, you can create one by clicking the "create account" button and following the instructions. Make sure to have your BSA membership ID number handy.

For the in-person classroom version of the training, check with your district or visit the Capitol Area Council website for upcoming course dates and registration information.
